AGS/ADGAP Outstanding Geriatric Medicine Education Coordinator of the Year Award

PURPOSE

The individual with the primary responsibility of coordinating a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program has a unique and invaluable role in medical education at their institution.  This individual manages the day-to-day activities of the geriatric medicine fellowship program while actively participating in and developing other components of geriatric medical education initiatives at their institution. 

This AGS/ADGAP Geriatric Medicine Education Coordinator of the Year Award recognizes the significant contributions that Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Coordinators make to advancing geriatrics education and training at their institutions. The awardee will have:

  • Primary responsibility for the day-to-day coordination of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.

  • Active involvement and contributions throughout the medical education continuum, including enhancements to educational offerings within their respective Department/Division’s programs and responsibility for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and Graduate Medical Education policies.

  • Evidence of superior management skills, leadership, and professionalism, including demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills, experience promoting communication among coordinators, program directors, trainees, and understanding of GME both internal and external to their institution.
  • Active participation in and/or presentations at appropriate national ADGAP/AGS, subspecialty meetings and locally in relevant division/department and GME committees and activities.
     

ELIGIBILITY

The Outstanding Geriatric Medical Education Coordinator Award is open to individuals who have primary responsibility for managing an ACGME-accredited Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at ADGAP members institutions that are participating in the NRMP Geriatric Medicine fellowship match. 

  • Coordinator for an ACGME accredited Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at an ADGAP member institution that is participating in the NRMP match.
  • At least 3 years in role as Education Coordinator.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates excellence in organizing and coordinating program activities.
  • Performs their professional duties with excellence and commitment.
  • Provides leadership in ongoing education and development of geriatric trainees by sustaining an environment of excellence of service in education and inspiration to trainees.
  • Implements improvement within training program.
     

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must complete the Award Nomination form (select “Apply Now” below). Required materials, to be submitted electronically to Denise McAlpin at dmcalpin@americangeriatrics.org include:

  • Two letters of support from faculty, one of which must be from the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program Director or leader of the geriatric academic program (typically the Division Chief)
  • One letter of support from a trainee (past or present)
  • Coordinator’s current CV/resume
     

AWARD

$500 will be awarded to the recipient.
